Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Colombo, Sri Lanka

Location: Colombo, Sri Lanka.  Likely gathering points include, but are not limited to, Temple Trees, Town Hall, Lipton Circus, Liberty Circle, and Parliament.

 

Event:

The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens of the probability of a large protest on October 30, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. near the Prime Minister’s residence, Temple Trees.  Due to the current political situation, U. S. Citizens are  reminded of an increased likelihood of civil unrest, strikes, and demonstrations. 

 

Actions to Take: The Embassy reminds citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  You should avoid areas of demonstrations and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

 

·         Avoid the areas of the demonstrations.

·         Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.

·         Monitor local media for updates

·         Be aware of your surroundings.

·         Keep a low profile.
