The Embassy has received information about two protests underway in Colombo. The Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) has organized a protest march from Kelaniya University and is headed towards the President Secretarial office. The United National Party (UNP) demonstration started at Victoria Park and is headed towards Hyde Park. Traffic congestion is expected near both protests.
We remind U.S. citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn violent. Please exercise caution in the vicinity of any demonstration; monitor media coverage of local events; and be aware of surroundings at all times.
