The Embassy has received information of an ongoing protest which started at the Fort Railway Station, following which police attempted to disperse the protest with tear gas at the Lotus Roundabout. However, protesters may continue to march to the Prime Minister’s office on Flower Road, Colombo 7, or Temple Trees, Colombo 3. Expect police presence and heavy traffic congestion. U.S. citizens are advised to avoid the areas during the demonstration.
We remind U.S. citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn violent. Please exercise caution if in the vicinity of any demonstrations, monitor media coverage of local events, and be aware of surroundings at all times.
