The Embassy has received reports of an ongoing protest of about 100 persons gathering at the Public Library in Colombo 7. They are expected to march to the Ministry of Power and Energy on Flower Road (Sir Ernest De Silva Mawatha), Colombo 7, and hold a demonstration at that location.
A second rally is expected to take place today at 3:00 p.m. starting at Viharamahadevi (Victoria) Park, Colombo 7, marching to Independence Square, Colombo 7.
Expect police presence and heavy traffic congestion. U.S. citizens are advised to avoid the areas during the demonstration.
We remind U.S. citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn violent. Please exercise caution if in the vicinity of any demonstrations, monitor media coverage of local events, and be aware of surroundings at all times.
