  • There are ongoing demonstrations across Sri Lanka today May 9, 2022. The protests have caused several road closures and there are reports of clashes between protesting groups in Colombo and other cities throughout Sri Lanka. The Government of Sri Lanka has announced an island-wide curfew effective immediately.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. U.S. Government personnel have been advised to avoid the protests.

  • Avoid the areas of the demonstrations.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
