Demonstration Alert: U.S. Embassy Colombo, Sri Lanka

Location:  Colombo, Sri Lanka

Event:  Today (August 2) around 4 PM, a group of approximately 1200 people from Manikya Pulliyar Covil are expected to form an annual religious procession from Bambalpitiya and walk North along Galle Road towards Galle Face Green.  The group is expected to pass the U.S. Embassy around 5:30 PM, and congested/blocked traffic may occur, especially along Galle Road.

 

Even peaceful demonstrations can quickly turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

 

Actions to Take: 

  • Avoid areas of rallies or demonstrations
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Keep a low profile.
